Astronaut. He attended Midvale Elementary School, Jordan High School and graduated from the University of Utah in 1953 with his Bachelor of Science in physics. He also obtained his Eagle Scout rank from the Boy Scouts of America. He served in the United States Naval Reserve as a Naval aviator. He worked at Goddard Research Center from 1964 to 1966. He helped to develope Apollo 11 EVA activities and as CAPCOM for Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 after being selected as one of the astronauts of Astronaut Group 5 in 1966. He was the backup pilot for two Skylab missions, 3 and 4. He was the Payload Commander on his only shuttle mission STS-51-B in 1985. The Orbiter Challenger landed at Edwards Air Force Base after completed 110 orbits on May 6, 1985. He retired from NASA after 20 years of service in 1986. After leaving NASA he served as a professor of physics and astronomy at Utah State University for 9 years.
