After the fall of France by Nazi Forces in June of 1940, he fled to the United States via Mexico, with only the clothes on his back and a briefcase containing all of his academic degrees. During his career, he gave lectures and taught courses as a visiting professor at various universities both in Europe and America: Paris, Lausanne, Vienna, Buenos Aires, Ghent, the National University of Mexico, the University of Southern California, the University of California, Memphis State University, and the University of Tennessee. He and his wife retired to the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
