Richard grew up in Englewood, Colorado, attended school, then worked at his parents' liquor store. He also worked at a car lot. His mother and stepfather had visited the central coast of California a few times before and decided to move there in the early 1980s. He moved to Paso Robles with them, and they all lived together until his stepfather passed away and then his mother passed away as well. Then he rented an apartment of his own on Spring Street in Paso Robles. After that, he moved in with a friend, Jack, just off of Creston Road and worked for him as well, detailing cars at the Sunset Car Wash on Spring Street. With the passing of roommate Jack, he moved into a mobile home in the north end of Atascadero, on El Camino Real. He loved animals, red vine whips, classic cars and hot rods, rock music, the beach, and the ocean. He suffered from a variety of health issues, having had brain surgery as a young man, but remained upbeat and independent. In the spring of 2022, he had to be taken to a hospital in San Luis Obispo, California due to breathing difficulties. He was treated and moved to The Orchards, a facility for post-acute rehabilitation and complex care needs, in Bakersfield, California. When his condition deteriorated a couple of months later, he was moved to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital where he passed away at 8:40 pm on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. He was survived by a brother named Wayne, a sister named Linda, another sister, and other relatives in the Denver area. A service was held for him, organized by his friend John, at the mobile home park, where he had lived, on August 27, 2922 at 11 am.
