Anthropologist and Rabbi. Edgar E. Siskin was considered by many to be one of the most prominent rabbis in all of Reform Judaism. He became a rabbi after becoming the youngest graduate ever of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He went on to get his BA degree at the University of Cincinnati and, after discovering anthropology, his PhD from Yale University where he studied with famous anthropologist Edward Sapir. During World War II he joined the U. S. Navy and served as a rabbi to the Marines. His passion for anthropology led him to do decades of research with the Washo Indians of Nevada. He published widely, including authoring the book, Washo Shamans and Peyotists: Religious Conflict in an American Indian Tribe. He founded the Jerusalem Center for Anthropological Studies. He and his wife Lillian Margolin Siskin had three children.
