George Kaufman, the scion of an established Manhattan real estate family, was best known for transforming a derelict Queens movie studio into what would become the Kaufman-Astoria Studios. Among the movies and television shows produced there were "The Cosby Show," "Sesame Street," "Blue Bloods," "Goodfellas," "Angels in America," "The Wiz," and "The Taking of Pelham 123" (2009 remake). He was also a vice president of Warner Brothers (1968 to 1970) and served on the boards of the Fashion Institute of Technology (Part of the State University of New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, the Citizens Union Foundation, and Exploring the Arts. He also helped Tony Bennett and his wife (Susan Benedetto) establish the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. Also of note was his brief engagement to actress Gina Lollobrigida in 1969. At the time of his death, Mr. Kaufman was the chairman of the Kaufman-Astoria Studios and his family's real estate business, the Kaufman Organization.
