An American pitcher for professional baseball, Jim played only one season for major league. He pitched for the Philadelphia Quakers, which became the Philadelphians and then became famously, the Phillies. He also played for the Wilmington Quicksteps.

Sited first at a game pitching for the Baltimore Monumentals when they played against the Quicksteps.
During a time that catchers' equiptment was not its best, no other players wanted to play against him, due to his hard and wild pitches, so, manager Harry Wright of the Phillies, had to let him go.

McElroy was found dead of an Opium overdose.
