Son of Edwin ABBEY and Matilda PARSHALL. Born in Pennsylvania.
He had 4 known younger siblings - Lafayette, Nettie, Alice Lucretia, and Carrie Rosetta "Rose".

Married 4 times and had four daughters.
1). Riley married 1st to Lucy Rosa (?) [ROHRER] on 20 Oct 1877 La Crosse, Wisconsin (per marriage record). This is the same person as Lulu Ludwiga/Ludwicka ROHRER (1855-1934) who was often called Lucy. Ludwiga is an old German name for Louise.
They had two daughters Emma and Mabel:
#1. Emma Nettie ABBEY (1880-1960), 1st m. In 1901 to William F SCHIKOROSKORY. Their only child Russell Willard later shortened his surname to Schik, m. 2nd to Hiram Richard CLEMANS in 1932 and had no issue.
#2. Mabel Grace ABBEY (1882-1876), 1st m. Frank W. Van WORMER (1877-1957) and had two children with him – Charlotte Van WORMER and Harry Wallace Van WORMER. Harry adopted his stepfather's surname THOMPSON. Mabel m. 2nd to William Howard THOMPSON (1874-1954), who was Frank W. Van Wormer's nephew, and had a daughter Dawn Maxine THOMPSON.

I am unable to find the 1880 census.

Riley and Lucy divorced. She remarried 2nd to Frank Xavier FALLER in 1887 in La Crosse, WI and they had a son Frank T. FALLER in 1888.

2) Riley W ABBEY married Julia McCLURE (1868-1903) on 19 Oct 1886 in Denver. They had two daughters Edna and Cerro:
#3. Edna Winefred ABBEY (1886-1977) married twice, first to James Harlan RUSH in June 1909 in Santa Ana, Orange Co., California. They divorced and had no children. Then she married 2nd to Louis Joseph GANGNON (or Gagnon) 10 Aug 1914 Hanford, Kings Co., California. No children, divorced. She died in 1977 in Mendocino Co., CA.
#4. Cerro Glorietta ABBEY (1889-1920) married John Eldo MHOON 18 Dec 1904 in Fresno Co., California. They had Rolland Chester MHOON and Edna Mae MHOON. She died in 1920, intestate.

Riley and Julia divorced. She remarried 2nd to William Henry ZIEGLER on 26 Dec 1901 in Fresno, California, but then she soon died in 1903.

3) Riley married 3rd to Mary A. Mhoon on 2 Jun 1901 in Fresno Co., California. No further info.

4) Riley married Effiegene Ella (DAVIS) Peal [Peel] on 21 Sep 1901 in Empire, Washoe Co., Nevada. They had no issue together.
The marriage records are a mess (CORRECTIONS IN BRACKETS).
The article in The Reno Gazette-Journal, Reno, Nevada, dated 21 Sep 1901, pg. 4, reads as follows:
The Marriage Bureau.
Marriage licenses were granted today to Otto F. Wermer of Empire, Nevada, and Miss

Edith A. Grover of Sacramento; Riley W. Wermer [ABBEY] of Fresno, California, and Miss Edith E. Pearl [MRS. EFFIE E. PEEL] of the same city. The marriages took place today [21 Sep 1901 in Empire, Washoe Co., Nevada].

In Newspapers.com, the transcription is a mess. The two marriages in this article were kind of lumped together as if they were just one couple. Note that both couples were married on the same day on 21 Sep 1901 in Empire, Nevada. The article and transcription imply that both Otto F Wermer of Empire, Nevada and Riley W. Abbey of Fresno, California had wives named Edith – Miss Edith A Grover of Sacramento, California and Miss Edith E Pearl of Fresno, California. However, this is NOT correct, Edith E Pearl should have been written as MRS. EFFIE E. PEAL (or PEEL). This can be verified by looking at the Western States Marriage Index by BYU-Idaho Special Collections/LDS Church Archives.

In about 1920, Riley and Effiegene moved to San Leandro, Alameda Co., California to be near his two daughters, Mabel Thompson and Edna Gangnon. Emma Clemans was still living in Wisconsin and Cerro was already deceased in 1920.
