Portuguese lawyer, journalist and politician. After the Carnation Revolution, he was also a deputy for the Socialist Party (elected in the second phase of the I Legislature, at the end of 1979), having integrated the Movement of Reformers. He was again elected in the following legislature, in October 1980, by the Social Democratic Party — in both cases by the Évora Electoral Circle. Nevertheless, in 1983, he held the position of Minister of Quality of Life in the IX Constitutional Government (of the Central Bloc), headed by Mário Soares. He was married to renowned poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen from 1947 to 1988. He is also the father of journalist, writer and commentator Miguel Sousa Tavares.
