Nevertheless, in 1983, he held the position of Minister of Quality of Life in the IX Constitutional Government (of the Central Bloc), headed by Mário Soares. He was married to renowned poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen from 1947 to 1988. He is also the father of journalist, writer and commentator Miguel Sousa Tavares.
