The Rev. Canon Dennis Glen Michno
May 15, 1947–September 26, 2018, age 71

The Rev. Canon Dennis Michno passed away September 26, 2018 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was the son of Polish Roman Catholic parents living in Mount Prospect, Illinois. His father Thaddeus (Ted) was a butcher by occupation and his mother Jeanne was a homemaker. Since his father's death in 1995, Jeanne moved to Wisconsin and resided with Dennis in late winter 1996 in Bayfield. She lived with him a few years before the need to transfer her to the nursing home in Washburn. Jeanne died in 2005 at age 90 and had been married to Ted for 60 years until his death in 1995. Dennis had one brother, Kenneth, who was for the most part estranged from the family. Kenneth died shortly after their mother and is interred in Greenwood Cemetery with his parents.

Fr. Michno started piano lessons at age 5 and was playing in Chicago area churches by age 8. He graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota in the late 1960s and "devoured as many liturgy courses as he could" during his students years there. From there he moved to New York City to attend Julliard where he received degrees in harpsichord, piano, and organ performance. He attended General Theological Seminary after entering the ordination process, earning an MDiv and an STM. During seminary, Dennis served as the musical director of a synagogue in Brooklyn.

Fr. Michno was Rector of Trinity Stoughton from Feb. 13, 1991 until Nov 26, 1995. His resignation letter indicated his need to retire due to medical conditions due to Multiple Sclerosis. After his retirement, he returned to his hometown in Wisconsin. After his retirement Fr. Michno felt the desire to do something, seeking a faith home where he could serve musically and clerically. In 1996 he became the Vicar of Christ Church, Bayfield WI until his health forced his full retirement. Dennis strongly believed he contracted MS after serving a short period of time as the diocesan exorcist. He was only expected to live five to ten years. He outlived that prognosis by 35 years.

Music was so vital to Fr. Dennis' life he felt that if he couldn't play his "brain would shrink and he would go mad." To that effect, he owned a Steinway grand piano, a harpsichord that was rescued from Boston Harbor, and a Johannus organ, all installed in his home on the hill in Bayfield. One room was built specifically for the piano, and the organ was installed in a room especially designed according to his plan for proper acoustics.

Fr. Dennis is well known in the Bayfield area for his creation of the Bayfield "Mostly Schubert" Festival, now known as the Bayfield Summer Concerts. For over twenty years this festival has brought free music to the community on Thursdays in the summer season.

He loved cooking and had the one-time privilege of cooking Peking duck for Julia Child and her husband. "It's very good!" He remembers her critique of his gastronomic creations. Julia Child inspired Dennis to write a "priest's handbook" in a manner similar to her two-volume editions of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in which everything was laid out sequentially, in order, and intended to be easy to master by anyone. When the first edition was published, he sent a copy to Julia, and she remarked on the thoroughness of the indexing, a note of pride he held on to over the years. "The Priest's Handbook; the ceremonies of the Church," is still in print and used in church around the world. Fr. Dennis also authored "The manual for Acolytes; the duties of the server at liturgical celebrations."

A Requiem Eucharist will be held on Thursday, October 4th at 11 AM on the feast of St Francis at Christ Episcopal Church in Bayfield, Wisconsin. His ashes will be placed in the Michno family plot at Greenwood Bayfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Dennis would be most happy if donations were made to the ongoing ministry of Christ Church Bayfield.
