Olympic Gold Medalist. He was a professional gymnast, who captured both the Olympic Gold Medal and the Silver Medal. Born one of eight children as Frithjof Olsen Sælen, his parents were Nils Johan Olsen Sælen and his wife Anna Mathilde Eriksen Sælen . He was later known as Frithjof Olsen Sælen Sr. He was a professional gymnast, who was a member of the club Fredrikshalds TF (or Fredrikshalds Turnforening ), of Bergen, Norway, and the club IL Norrøna (or Idrettslaget Norrøna), of Bergen, Norway. He would eventually go onto represent his home country of Norway at the 1912 Summer Olympics that were held in Stockholm, Sweden. Together with his team members, including Isak Abrahamsen, Hans Beyer, Hartman Bjørnson, Alfred Engelsen, Bjarne Johnsen, Sigurd Jørgensen, Knud Knudsen, Alf Lie, Rolf Lie, Tor Lund, Petter Martinsen, Per Mathisen, Jacob Opdahl, Nils Opdahl, Bjarne Pettersen, Øistein Schirmer, Georg Selenius, Sigvard Sivertsen, Robert Sjursen, Einar Strøm, Gabriel Thorstensen, Thomas Thorstensen, and Nils Voss, he was part of the Norwegian men's gymnastics team which captured an Olympic Gold Medal in the Team All-Around Competition Artistic Gymnastics Free System Men's Event. His final team standing score result was ranking 1 with 114.25 (22.85 TP ) points. He also represented his home country of Norway at the 1920 Summer Olympics that were held in Antwerpen, Belgium. Together with his team members including Alf Aanning, Karl Aas, Jørgen Andersen, Gustav Bayer, Jørgen Bjørnstad, Asbjørn Bodahl, Eilert Bøhm, Trygve Bøyesen, Ingolf Davidsen, Haakon Endreson, Jakob Erstad, Harald Færstad, Herman Helgesen, Peter Hol, Otto Johannessen, Johan Anker Johansen, Trygve Kristoffersen, Henrik Nilsen, Jacob Opdahl, Arthur Rydstrøm, Bjørn Skjærpe, Wilhelm Steffensen, Olav Sundal, Reidar Tønsberg, and Lauritz Wigand-Larsen, he was part of the Norwegian men's gymnastics team which won an Olympic Silver Medal in the Team All-Around Competition Artistic Gymnastics Free Systems Men's Event and Men's Apparatus Event. His final team standing score result was ranking 2 with 48.55 points. He continued to represent club Fredrikshalds TF (or Fredrikshalds Turnforening ), of Bergen, Norway, and club IL Norrøna (or Idrettslaget Norrøna), of Bergen, Norway, and be active in sports events until his death. He was married to Astrid Weltzin Sælen, and the couple had three children including the famous Norwegian writer, illustrator, and member of the resistance during World War II, Frithjof Olsen Sælen Jr.. He passed away in his native Bergen, Norway, on October 9, 1975, at the age of 83, and he was buried in Mollendal Cemetery in Bergen, Norway, where several other famous Norwegian personalities are also laid to rest.
