Spent 12 years in the majors as a shortstop from 2000 to 2011 with seven clubs, spending four seasons each with the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, three years with the Boston Red Sox, while also a season each with the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves. Born in the Dominican Republic, Lugo attended Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, New York before going on to Connors State College in Oklahoma. He was drafted by Houston in the 43rd round of the 1994 MLB draft. Lugo made his major league debut on April 15, 2000 and would finish his rookie year with a .283 batting average, 119 hits, and 22 stolen bases. Lugo played in 140 games in 2001 as the Astros won the National League Central Division. He was released by Houston in May 2003, but was signed shortly after by Tampa Bay, for whom he would see the most playing time of his career, playing in 505 games from 2003 to 2006. Lugo hit a career-high .295 in 2005 and was hitting .308 in 2006 before he was traded to the Dodgers in July. He eventually signed with the Red Sox in December 2006, and ultimately won the World Series with Boston in 2007, where he hit .385 in four games of the series. After his final major league season, Lugo continued to play in the Dominican Republic until the winter of 2013-2014.
