Professional footballer, England player. He was a right-back in the Preston North End Football Team who became known as "The Invincibles" after they won the inaugural Football League competition in 1888–89, completing the season without a goal being scored against it in both the League and the FA Cup, so becoming the first team ever to achieve the "Double". Born as Robert Henry Howarth, but always known as 'Bob' to distinguish him from his father, he competed in rugby and cricket before joining Preston North End Football Club in 1883. One of the historic feats in football history in which he had a share was when North End achieved a record Cup-tie win by 26-0 against Hyde, in October, 1887. He played in 18 of Preston's 22 League Championship matches and played in a defence-line that achieved nine clean-sheets. He was right back in the Preston North End XI which won the English Cup without a goal being scored against it, and also won the League Championship in 1888-9. He played for the international English team, making four appearances between 1886 and 1894. In 1891 he had joined Everton FC, but returned to finish his career back at Preston North End. Outside of football, he became a solicitor after being called to the bar in 1908, partnering with his brother, Sir Alfred Howarth. His grave is unmarked.
