WILLIAM LAURIN.62, DEAD AT CORNWALL Veteran Printing Trade Craftsman Was' One of Family of Publishers (Special to The Gazette.) Cornwall, February 5. William Laurin, one of a family of printers and publishers of that name, died from a heart attack this afternoon at his home, 129 First street west. Born at St. Clet, Que., 62 years ago, a son of Isaac Laurin, V.S., he apprenticed himself to the printing trade at the age of 16 and had been engaged in that business ever since. Starting at "the case" in the otfice of the old Glengarrian at Alexandria before machinery was introduced to the trade, he became an expert compositor. Later he was employed in the office of The Gazette at Montreal. He then returned to Alexandria and worked for some years for A. G. F. MacDonell, in the office of the News, during which time the monoline typesetting machine was introduced, to be followed by the linotype. William Laurin dropped the "stick" and mastered both these machines, becoming an adent operator. Before coming to Cornwall to join the staff of the Standard 18 years ago, he had worked in Pembroke and Eganville and for a few years before the amalgamation of the Standard and Freeholder in May, 1932, was moreman of the mechanical department of the Standard. Since the amalgamation of the local papers he was employed in the composing room of the Standard-Freeholder as a linotype operator, having been "in harness" almost continuously for 46 years. Besidss his wife, the former Angelina Lebouef, of Valleyfield, Que., he leaves two sons and two daughters, Ernest Laurin of the C.N.R., Cornwall; Alcide Laurin on the Standard-Freeholder staff; Mrs. Arnold Earner, Cornwall, and Miss Theresa Laurin, at home. He also leaves two brothers and four sisters, Mayor J. A. Laurin, proprietor of the Times, Alexandria; Leo Laurin, proprietor of the Leader-Morrisburg; Mrs. Maud Crateau, Prescott; Mrs. Ernest Blythe, Ottawa; Mrs. J. N. Trottier and Miss Fa-diola. Laurin, of Cornwall. Another brother, Alcide Laurin, was killed during a hockey match at Max-ville, February 24, 1905. Hector Laurin, former proprietor of the Hawkesbury Echo, who died three years ago, was a brother, the Echo being now in charge of Eugene Laurin, a nephew. Another nephew is W. E. Crateau, proprietor of the Prescott Journal. The funeral will be held Friday morning to St. Columban's church and vault.
