Roman Catholic Cardinal. He served in various positions in the Catholic Church, both in Chile and in the Roman Curia. He studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, where he received a bachelor's degree in the arts and biology, and the Major Seminary of Santiago. On June 12, 1954, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Pio Fariña Fariña, the vicar general and an auxiliary bishop of Santiago. In 1955, he earned his doctorate and later taught both philosophy and theology at the Major Seminary of Santiago and of the Pontifical Catholic University until 1965. He also served as a dean of the university, and as a peritus at the Second Vatican Council, for which he later received an honoris causa doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in 1996. In 1984, he was named as the titular bishop of both Thibilis and Rancagua. A year later, he was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. He later served as the bishop for both Rancagua and Valparaiso during the late 1980s and 1990s. He was prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments from 1996 to 2002 and became a cardinal in 1998. He also was made a Cardinal-Deacon in the consistory of 21 February 1998, with the title of San Saba. In 2005, he announced the election of Pope Benedict XVI. He later retired to Chile to work as a parish priest.
