Robert was the son of Allan Ramsay the Poet who at the time was still a Wigmaker/Barber and Christian Rosse in Edinburgh.
This burial is noted twice on Scotland's people citing 'east Entrikins Tomb' for Robert son of Allan and both citing buried 13 April. One notes the father a "barber", the other the father a "wigmaker". It is clear this is the same Allan Ramsay who later became a Poet.
Scotlands People: Old Parish Registers Deaths 685/1 880 32 Edinburgh.
Buried on the 13th at "east Entrikins Tomb", noted age "1 1/2 years" or 18 months, father Allan noted a "barber"
Scotlands People: Old Parish Registers Deaths 685/1 870 366 Edinburgh
Buried on the 13th at "E. entrikins tomb", father Allan noted a "wigmaker"
Robert was baptised on the 10th of November 1716 placing a birth Oct/Nov, an exact match 18 months later to the death and burial. There are no other Allan Ramsay's at this time who this child's burial could have belonged.
Some people intend on claiming Robert grew up and migrated to America, however this meets some considerable scrutiny. There has not been any evidence to date linking Robert in America to the Poet Allan Ramsay. Family lore notes "According to family tradition Robert came to America at the age of twelve with two brothers". However, if the son of Allan, it is clearly impossible since firstly Allan only had three sons, and secondly of the sons only Allan Jr. is known to have survived and never migrated becoming a Painter for nobility and royalty having died in 1784 in London with a Will noting no such siblings in America. The alternative Robert requires key evidence to prove he was born exactly in 1716 and in Edinburgh as given ages at death of older people aren't always the most accurate. There are multiple Robert's born +/- 10 years of 1716 and in different parts of Scotland. A plausible candidate is a 1716 baptism to George Ramsay in Edinburgh.
