2006 obituary. SACO--Helen P. Ashton, age 106, formerly of Beach St. died early Sunday morning at the Wardwell Home in Saco. She was born in Lowell, Mass., December 2, 1899, a daughter of John and Hattie Connors Peters. Helen attended schools in New Brunswick and Massachusetts and in 1928 she moved to Saco. Helen was employed as a receptionist and bookkeeper for the Bates Manufacturing Company for over 31 years. Mrs. Ashton lived in her own home well past the age of 100 and was known for her constant smile and sunny disposition. Mrs. Ashton had been interviewed many times for local papers about her knowledge of the local Saco and Biddeford area. She is predeceased by her first husband, Leon Lancey in 1961 and her second husband, Bill Ashton in 1978. Mrs. Ashton was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Biddeford, the ladies E & I Union and for over 60 years a member of the Yarmouth Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include a grand-niece and a grand-nephew. A private graveside service will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church 18 Crescent St., Biddeford. Rev. Graham Pierce and Rev. Suzanne Colburn will officiate. A reception will follow at the Wardwell Home 43 Middle St., Saco.
