Born in Constantinople, Greece. He and his older brother were in the import-export business with offices in London an d Liverpool, England, while he lived in Alexandria. He became a naturalize British citizen in 1850. After his death and during a British economical depression, his sons lost his business and the family returned to Egypt in poverty.
