Civil Rights Figure. Gaines, an African American, had been denied admission to the law school of the University of Missouri and he applied to state courts for an order to allow his admission on the grounds that refusal constituted a denial of his rights under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Missouri Supreme Courts upheld the university's decision to reject his application, but the U.S. Supreme Court reversed this decision & maintained that the state of Missouri was obligated to provide equal facilities for Blacks. Gaines disappeared shortly after the decision was made, but his case had an major impact on segregation in the United States.
