Mary Williamina Muir (nee Cunninghame) was born near Ayr in Scotland on the 9th of January 1876 the daughter of William Cunninghame and his wife Mary Georgina (nee Oswald). Her father was a gentleman.

In 1881 they were living at the family home Belmont House. Her father was a Major in the Royal Renfrew Militia.

Mary married Sir Garnet Wolseley Muir on the 15th of December 1903 at Holy Trinity Church in Ayr. Her husband was a Colonel serving in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He had attended Wellington College and the Royal Military College in Sandhurst so he knew the area around Camberley.

They had at least three children. The eldest William Stanley was born in Ayr in 1904 as was their daughter Mary Violet Angela who was born in 1907.

Their youngest son Kenneth was born in 1912 in Chester.

In 1928 they moved to a large house on Church Hill in Camberley known as Shalbourne. They were still living here in 1939.

Later that year Mary was staying at Parkhatch at Loxhill in Godalming. This mansion had been the home of Joseph Godman’s family for generations and Mary was living here with her daughter and son-in-law. (Soon after the mansion was taken over by the Canadian Army).

Post WW2 they still lived at Shalbourne House in Camberley.

Their youngest son Kenneth was serving as a Major in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders when he was killed in Korea in 1950. He was awarded a posthumous V.C.

Her husband took his own life in 1954. According to the inquest the death of his son was too much for him and he was found in his room at the White Hart Hotel in Frimley with serious wounds. He was taken to Guildford but they could not save him.

Mary was staying at Mount Alvernia in Guildford in 1960. It was a private nursing home run by nuns’. Mary died here on the 19th of April 1960 and was buried at Frimley on the 21st of April 1960.

Their son is remembered on their grave.
