Poet. Eileen Duggan was a New Zealand poet and journalist who was active throughout the early half of the twentieth century. While working for a newspaper, she began publishing her own poems in it's columns, starting in the year 1917. She published collections of her poems as books and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to literature in New Zealand. She is regarded as the first New Zealand poet to achieve international recognition with a society of fans in the United States although, she was largely forgotten when she died. In 2009, a memorial was erected in a small park at the base of Tuamarina Cemetery in dedication to her memory although she is buried in Karori Cemetery.
