Suffragette. Lily May Atkinson was a New Zealand born feminist and suffragette. For nearly thirty-five years, she served as a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union of New Zealand with which she held several positions such as president of the Wellington branch and dominion president. In 1901 she was elected Vice President of the National Council of Women of New Zealand. She was also involved with the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, Plunkett Society, National Defence League of New Zealand and the Forward Movement. After her marriage she continued to campaign and work alongside her politician husband Arthur Atkinson. She was noted for her popularity around the country and her enthusiasm in regards to her campaigning.
