German sculptor and wood-carver. Riemenschneider was the premier German artist in wood carving and stone sculpture during the 15th and 16th centuries, and his fame endures today. His works were mainly religious in nature, plus stone grave markers for the rich and famous, and can be found today in several well-known German cities such as WŸrzburg, Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, Bamberg, Aschaffenburg. Riemenschneider also served as councilman and mayor of WŸrzburg. In 1822 his tombstone, carved by his son, was found in the ground near the St. Kilian Cathedral in WŸrzburg. The original tombstone is now in the MainfrŠnkisches Museum in the Festung (Fortress) Marienberg in WŸrzburg.
