Union Civil War Veteran. Born in Springfield, Ohio, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1843 with his brother, Jacob Hoffner, and became engaged in the tin industry. In 1846, he removed to Dayton, Ohio and started his own tinning business. He took his business to Licking, Ohio in 1849 and to Lockland, near Cincinnati, in 1852. After the Civil War began, he volunteered to serve in the Union Army and enlisted with the 138th Ohio National Guard Infantry. He was mustered into Company I as a Corporal. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati and later became a hardware dealer. He died at his residence in Lockland in 1889 when he was 62 years old. He is buried in the Hoffner Lot of Section 57 at Spring Grove Cemetery near the elegant Hoffner monument. He does not have an individual marker.
