Prime Minister of The Netherlands. A member of the Liberal Union party, he served as prime minister from July 26, 1897 to July 31, 1901. Prior to becoming prime minister, he attended Leiden University and was in the trading business. He then became involved in the banking business. He went on to become president of the Dutch Central Bank. He was also professor of political economics and statistics at the University of Amsterdam. He taught in the Faculty of Law there from from 1877 until 1885. In 1891 he became minister of finance and served in that position until he became prime minister. He is best remembered as an economist of international reputation who dominated economics in the Netherlands during the second half of the 19th century. After leaving the position of prime minister, he served as a member of the Lower House of the States General for the Gorinchem constituency from 1905 until his death.
