Statesman, Prime Minister of Portugal. He served from 1 June 1879 to 25 March 1881. Prior to becoming prime minister he was a lawyer, Mason, and member of the Historical Party. He was elected in 1851 as a deputy to the parliament. He was also minister of the interior from 1862 to 1864 and finance from 1869 to 1870. In 1875 he took over as leader of the Historical Party and the following year he succeeded in uniting the two major parties against the government. On 29 May 1879, following a major financial scanda, the second government of the incumbent prime minister fell. On 1 June 1879, King D. Luís appointed him as prime minister. His term was short lived and he is best remembered for his party leadership.
