Johann Joseph, Freiherr von Semlin, was born Mostafa Ali Mirza Khan, the son of Nader Shah of Persia. After his father's assassination, he was safely transferred to the Empress Maria Theresa in Vienna, Austria, who named him Johann Joseph, Freiherr von Semlin. He was sent to Graz to learn the German language and European culture. He converted to Christianity in 1756 and two years later returned to Vienna. He had a distinguished career in the Austrian army and was offered the throne of Persia by the Emperor Napoleon, but declined the offer.
