President of Uruguay. He served for two different terms. First, from November 6, 1830 to October 24, 1834 and second, from March 1, 1839 to March 1, 1843. Prior to becoming president, he was a rancher who joined the military in 1810. He fought in a variety of conflicts and wars eventually becoming a general. He was one of the founders of the Colorado Party. After Uruguayan independence was proclaimed in 1828, he became president. Political infighting among party factions led to his second term. He is best remembered for being an icon of the Colorado Party.
