Politician, Author. He was a Liberal Member of Parliament from 5th December 1890 until 19th December 1896 in the electorate of Wairau. He wrote several books about New Zealand history. His book "The Treaty of Waitangi: How New Zealand Became a British Colony" (1914) was one of the only books that touched on the nations founding document prior to the foundation of the Waitangi Tribunal. Other books he wrote included "An Old New Zealander" (1911), "New Zealand's First War" (1926) and "Old Marlborough: Or, The Story of a Province" (1900). In 1933, for public service, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.
