He was a Minnesota State Senator, U.S. Civil War Veteran and Attorney. A native of New Sharon, Franklin County, Maine, he graduated from Waterville College in 1853. He studied law, was admitted the bar in Maine, and practiced as an attorney in Bangor. He moved to Belle Plaine, Minnesota in 1857 and continued his law practice. Baldwin became a member of the Minnesota State Senate and served from 1858 to 1860. He then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and formed a law firm partnership with his brother, Bvt. General William Henry Baldwin, (Harvard JD). When the Civil War began, he enlisted with the Guthrie Grays, Company H of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and became a Corporal. He was appointed by William Haines Lytle to distribute rations and became the post commissary. He was mustered out after serving his 90 days enlistment in September, 1861. He resumed his law profession and continued to live in Cincinnati, where he died at his residence in Columbia-Tusculum, in 1899 (70 years old).
