Carl Josef, Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck, was the son of Maria Lazarus Friedrich Carl Alois Anton Vinzenz, Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck, and his wife, Franziska, Gräfin und Edle Herrin von und zu Eltz gen. Faust von Stromberg. He was married in Luxembourg on April 10, 1958 to Princess Marie-Adélaïde of Luxembourg, the third child and the second daughter of Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma. They had four children.

He was born in Ramułtowice, a village in the Lower Silesian (Dolnośląskie) Voivodeship, in the District of Średzki, in the municipality of Kostomłoty. The village was known as Illnisch-Romolkwitz until 1939.
