Jessie MacDonald was a Canadian.
MacDonald was born and raised in Quebec. She graduated from McGill University, and then attended Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their mother, Canadian-born Jessie MacDonald (1889–1970), was a Master's graduate from Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Massachusetts. At Radcliffe, in 1911 she met American poet Conrad Aiken. MacDonald and Aiken married in 1912, and had 3 children – John (born 1913, Jane (born 1917), and Joan (born 1924) – all of whom would grow up to be successful novelists.
From 1921 the family lived in England, where their 3rd child were born.

Aiken and McDonald divorced in 1929. Macdonald then married English poet and novelist Martin Armstrong. The two older children were sent to boarding school, while took MacDonald and the youngest, 5-year-old Joan to live at his home in the Sussex Downs. MacDonald homeschooled Joan Aiken until she was 12, when she also was sent to boarding school.
MacDonald never published a book.
