Ruth Porter, the matriarch of Porterdale Farms, Inc., died at 100 on August 27,2014, in her home on Dry Hill, Watertown, N.Y. She was born January 18, 1914, the daughter of Clarence and Essie Babcook Waful of Black River. She was the Widow of Glenn C. Porter who died September 20,1999. Ruth graduated from Black River High School in 1931 and Watertown School of Commerce in 1932. Glenn and Ruth were married July 14, 1934 in Watertown by Rev Earnest Love, District Superintendent of the Northern New York Conference of the Methodist Church. They purchased the Home farm on Dry Hill in 1938 and established Porterdale Farms, Inc. in 1977. Ruth was the farm's Bookkeeper for fifty five years, peddled eggs and dressed chickens for customers in Watertown in the early years, but primarily they sold milk from their Ayrshire and Holstein Cows. Being a 4-H Leader, member of Watertown Historical Society, Home Bureau, Farm Bureau, Cooperative Extension, Adams Center Grange, and many church activities kept her very involved in the community. In 1977 she was recognized by the American Mother's Association as New York State Mother of the Year! This took her to the Waldorf in New York where women from all over the' Nation made speeches about their lives. She shared her love for her family, farm life and her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ with all she met. Since 1937 Ruth was a Member of the first United Methodist church in Watertown where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader and served on many Committees. She held Leadership positions with the United Methodist Women at the Local, District, and Conference Levels. From 1984-1992 she was a Director on the Board of Global Ministries, meeting in New York City. The Committees she served on were Rural Life Network and Committee on Relief, taking her to cities all over the Country. Ruth was also a Lay Member to Annual Conference for fifteen years and went to General and Jurisdictional Conference twice. She also served on the Conference Committee on the Status and Role of Women. Ruth is survived by four Sons: David Porter (Judy), Watertown; Richard Porter, Adams Center; Douglas Porter (Lynda), Troy; Dale Porter (Beth), Theresa. Two daughters: Barbara Wiley (Paul), Johnsonville; and Beth Kerley (Walter), Watertown. She and Glenn also reared two Grandsons: Richard Porter, Beaver Falls, and Bruce Porter, Batavia. She is survived by twenty Grandchildren, thirty Great Grandchildren, and three Great Great Grandchildren. Sister Bertha Pierce, Black River, survives her as well as several Nieces and Nephews; Brother C. Edgar Waful died July 11, 1990. Instead of flowers, contributions can be made to the Glenn and Ruth Scholarship Fund at Jefferson County Community College, Watertown, N.Y. 13601, First United Methodist Church, 236 Mullin Street, Watertown, N.Y. 13601, or Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street, Watertown, N.Y. 13601. There will be a Memorial Service led by Rev. Jeff Nowak , Rev. Joyce Woodcock and Rev. Mark Pierce at the First United Methodist Church September 20th at 11a.m. Gravesite burial will be at Sanford Corner's Cemetery, Calcium, N.Y. at 3 p.m., led by her nephew Rev. Mark Pierce.
