Michael Lambert Tree was a son of Arthur Ronald Lambert Field Tree and his wife, Nancy Keene Perkins (widow of Henry Marshall Field at the time of their marriage). His father was a British Conservative Party politician, journalist, and investor who served as the Member of Parliament for the Harborough constituency in Leicestershire from 1933 to 1945. His mother, Nancy Lancaster (the surname of her third husband, Lieutenant Colonel Claude Lancaster) was a renowned designer and the owner of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, a British decorating firm that established what is known as the English country house style.

He was married on November 3, 1949, at Chatsworth to Lady Anne Cavendish, daughter of Edward Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire, and his wife, Lady Mary Gascoyne-Cecil. He inherited Merewworth Castle following the death of his uncle, Peter Beatty, on October 26, 1949.
