Politician. Manlio Fabio Altamirano Flores studied law and went on to work as a clerk in Pánuco. During the Delahuerta Revolt, Altamirano joined the Mexican army to fight the insurgents. This began his political career. He was one of the founders of the National Revolutionary Party (PNR), currently the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). With very radical ideas and concepts, he was anticlerical in addition to having ties to the Mexican Communist Party. In 1929 he was elected deputy of the PNR. He participated in the National Anticlerical Congress in 1931 as a delegate from his native state of Veracruz and became known as a fighter for social justice and agrarian reform. In 1929 he was the founder and first manager of the parastatal newspaper "El Nacional." He was elected senator for the state of Veracruz in 1934. In 1936 he was elected governor of Veracruz. However, before he could take office, he was assassinated at the Café de Tacuba in Mexico City on behalf of the landowners of Veracruz.
