In 1836, Judge BOTSFORD came to the Bend and commenced the practice of his profession. He was born at Sackville, Nov. 25th, 1813 and when he located in Moncton, the Bend was still a struggling village. At that time and for some years later, a large pond, surrounded by swamp existed where the post office and custom house, Bank of Montreal and other fine buildings are now, located in the business heart of the town. From this pond a stream flowed westerly along Main street, finding its outlet to the river through the site of the present market house. This stream disappeared several years ago ... Judge Botsford was married in 1842 at Moncton to Jane CHAPMAN d/o John CHAPMAN from Cumberland, England and had five children. three daughters and one son, all living in Moncton and another son who died. Sarah L. BOTSFORD, the eldest child, is the wife of W.J. CROASDALE, C.E.; Eliza BOTSFORD is the wife of Geo. C. PETERS, manager of the telephone exchange; Robert L. BOTSFORD is a physician and surgeon and Florence BOTSFORD, now residing with her parents, is the relict of late Thomas BYERS.

The Province was startled upon learning of the fatal accident which befell Judge Bliss BOTSFORD at Moncton on Saturday night. It seems that he fell from the second flat of a building on Main street occupied by the city club. Deceased was in his 77th year. Judge Botsford was one of the oldest residents of Moncton and a pioneer lawyer of the place having come as an attorney in 1836. His brothers are Senator BOTSFORD, Sackville; George BOTSFORD, Clerk of the Legislative Council and Charles BOTSFORD now located in Washington.

Years ago the name of Bliss BOTSFORD was a household word in Westmorland Co. A descendant of the United Empire Loyalists, he belongs to one of the oldest families in the Province. He came to Moncton about fifty years ago when the place was wholly wilderness and bog. He has shot birds along a creek that formerly ran in the vicinity where the City buildings stand. He represented the county in the Legislature.
