Russell Grant Cottrell, 81, of Orem, UT passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, 3 Jan 2020 surrounded by loved ones.

Russ was born 22 May 1938 in Burlington, WY to Samuel Ross Cottrell and Mary Lourene Sims. Married Shirley Ann Merrill on 25 Aug 1962 in Skowhegan, Maine and later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on 8 Jul 1963. They had 8 Children.

He graduated from Cody High School, Wyoming in 1956; Graduated from University of Wyoming with BA in 1962; BYU with Master of Education in 1983; BYU with Ed Specialist in 1984.

He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He served a "Spanish American" (Texas) Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from 1958 - 1960. He served in many positions, his favorite being Ward Clerk.

He served in the United States Army in Intelligence for 20 years, 1962-1982. Retired with Rank of Major. Served 2 tours in the VietNam War. He received many medals and awards, including the Bronze Star with the oak leaf cluster. Russ loved his country and taught others to do the same.

He was a Math Teacher for Provo School District, at Dixon and Centennial Middle schools and also Adult Education for 20 Years, 1983- 2003, but continued teaching until 2015.

His hobbies were gardening, hunting, fishing, and love of serving others.

Russ is survived by his wife Shirley Ann of Orem, UT; children, Donna (Ken) Heslin of Newtown, CT; Delsi Benson of Eagle Mountain, UT; Debra (Roger) Johnson of Pleasant Grove, UT; Darla (George) Anderson of Wellington, UT; Diane (Clint) Smith of Layton, UT; Dora (Warren) Workman of Vineyard, UT; James (Fericelia) of Panama; John *deceased (Natasha Fedrigotti) of Eagle Mountain, UT; and sister Barbara (Keith) Yeager of Brigham City, UT; 36 Grandchildren & 42 Great Grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ross & Lourene; Brothers, Melvin, Milford, & Albert; Sisters, Thelma and Iona McDowell. Son, John; Grandsons, Peter Smith & Spencer Benson.

Funeral Services will be held @ 11am on Friday, 10 Jan 2020 at the LDS Building on 85 E 700 N, in Orem, UT. Viewing will be held on Thursday, from 6-8pm and 9am before services, both at the church building.

Graveside Services to be held at Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery @ Camp Williams, UT @ 2pm.
