Lois was born April 3, 1933 in Elmira, New York to John Malcolm Near and Dana Dorothy Wright. Lois graduated from the Elmira Free Academy in 1950. She studied music and drama. She was in the Glee Club, Choir, Student Council and the Senior Play. She graduated from Ithica College in 1953. Lois was a speech theraist at the Dr. Anna Stuart Clinic at Booth School. She was also a singer. New Year's Day 1957 she married playwright James "Jay" Richard Broad. They divorced in 1983 and Lois married George "Scotty" Bowers in 1984. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Gerald Near, and first husband Jay Broad. She was survived by her second husband George "Scotty" Bowers.
