Canadian Politician. He served as the 20th Premier of Nova Scotia from October 5, 1978 to September 12, 1990. He graduated from Mount Allison University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Certificate in Engineering. He went on to study law at Dalhousie Law School and graduated in 1958. After graduation, he practiced law and in 1972, was appointed Queen's Counsel. He later went on to earn doctorates from various other colleges and universities. In 1967, he was elected to the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly and remained a member of this body until 1990. Four years later, he became the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. In 1978, he was elected Premier of Nova Scotia and served in this post until 1990 when he was appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. He remained in the Senate until retiring in 2006.
