Politician. Former State Senator and the son of the Civil Rights icon Ralph David Abernathy, Jr. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives, as a Democrat in 1988 and then in the Georgia State Senate in 1992. Following a 10-year successful political career he accepted his calling by God into the ministry. He was licensed in 1999 by the former President of the National Progressive Baptist Convention and by Rev. Dr. T. Dewitt Smith. Later, he was ordained in 2001 by the late Rev. Dr. Howard W. Creecy, Sr. and the late Rev. Dr. Howard W. Creecy, Jr. at Atlanta’s historic West Hunter Street Baptist Church. This is the church where his legendary father, Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, Sr., pastured for 30 years. He received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Theology from the North Carolina College of Theology. He was diagnosed with colon cancer five years ago, and revealed that he was hospitalized for several weeks last year after it had spread to his liver. He died of natural causes.
