Elsie Thalimer Sanderson Bard, known throughout her adult life as Sydney, and her husband Darsie Campbell Bard were the parents of Betty MacDonald, the author of "The Egg and I."

In 1900 the Sandersons were living on Newbury Street, Boston. She had a younger brother, Jim Sanderson, and Darsie Bard, a student at Harvard, applied to be Jim's mathematical tutor. Elsie was an artist who loved to draw. She studied at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston as one of his first students. Fellow students were painters N.C. Wyeth and Gordon Grant. Later she became a dress designer for a couturier after he saw some paper doll costumes she had made for young friends.
