James Graham was baptized on March 16, 1714, in Drumbo Presbyterian Church in County Down, Ireland, the son of a William Graham of that congregation and that parish. Family tradition holds that this James Graham immigrated to Pennsylvania about 1733 from north of Carlingford Lough (Bay) in County Down (Ulster), Ireland; however, no record of a James Graham immigrating into Pennsylvania occurs until the 1740s. James Graham was married twice, first to (unknown name) the mother of six children: Henry Graham (ca. 1739-1764); William Graham (ca. 1740? - ?); Elizabeth Graham (1742-1805), wife of James Hennery (1740- ?); Charles Graham (1743- ?); James Graham (1745-1790); and Mary Graham (1747-1815), wife of Lewis Morgan. James Graham's first wife died ca. 1750, sometime after which he married the widow Mary Barber (née Mary McConnell) (1720-1791), who already had a young daughter, Esther Barber. Together, they had five children, namely - John Graham, MD (1756-1813); George Graham (1757-1826); Joseph Graham (1759-1836); Sarah Graham (1761-1825), wife of Robert Allison (1750-1804); and Ann Graham (1763-1840), wife of Thomas Spratt Barnett (1759-1832). James Graham died by October 22, 1763, in London Britain, Chester County, PA. and was buried there. [Reference James Graham's LWT, October 1763, Chester County, PA] By 1768, after the death of both James Graham and his son Henry Graham, Mrs. Mary McConnell Barber Graham and her children, all of whom were minors, moved south, ultimately settling in Mecklenburg County, NC, where they lived out their lives, her three sons distinguishing themselves in Revolutionary War service, as well as in medicine, industry, military, and governmental service during the early years of the republic.
