Explorer, Geographer. Born in Riobamba, Ecuador, he was educated in geography at the Colegio San Luis and completed his first map of the Ecuador region in 1725. In spite of occupying many administrative positions to include of Mayor of Cabildo, he continued scientific observations such as the first projects involving commerce and transportation routes between Peru and Panama. In the 1740s, he traveled to Europe, Spain and the Neverlands charting and making maps. He was also the first from Ecuador, to set a research station in Antarctica. For his merits he was bestowed the title of Governor of Atacames, by King Philip V of Spain in 1746 and was received as a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1747. In late 1748, he was invited to be a member of the Royal Society of London, but died before he could be inducted.
