Eleanor was the third child of William Alexander, the future Church of Ireland Primate of All Ireland and his wife Frances, who was to become the world-famous hymn-writer. She herself was a poet and a novelist. She never married and in her later years she resided at apartments at Hampton Court Palace in London. She is buried with her parents in Derry City Cemetery
