Born in Appomattox County, on July 7, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Otway (Totsie) Moorman, and the late George F. Abbitt, Sr. Dora was a lifelong member of New Hope Baptist Church, a faithful member of the WMU, the Fidelis Sunday School class, a Sunday school teacher, YWA leader, Extension leader, and a staunch supporter of all activities of the church. She made and gave away hundreds of cakes and sent hundreds of cards. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, and friend. She loved her family and her God and many people called her Mama Dora.
She is survived by two daughters, Bolling C. Carter and her husband Richard, Ottie C. Huddleston and her husband Gary, both of Appomattox; one brother, Col. (Ret.) Charles W. Abbitt, of Richardson, TX; ; three grandchildren, R. B. Carter, Jr. of Lynchburg, Beth Carter of Manchester, England, Stella Osborne of Lynchburg; two great-grandchildren, Emily Carter and Anna Carter.
She was preceded in death by her sister and three brothers, Eloise A. Snead; Judge George F. Abbitt, Jr.; Hon. Watkins M. Abbitt, Sr, Herbert M. Abbitt.
Funeral services will be held 11a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Rogers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family wishes to express appreciation for the care that the CNAs and nurses gave Dora at Appomattox Health and Rehab Center, especially in the last months of her life. And also for the care Dr. Larry Smith gave her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church , 6227 Old Courthouse Rd, Appomattox, VA 24522.
