Lyric poet,author,and translator, he received an honorary degree from the University of New Mexico in 1962. He died from complications of a stroke. He was the son of Annie Louise Brewer(1858-1937) and Thomas Edgarton Bynner and the brother of Edwin Tyler Bynner(#122923953).
He graduated from Harvard with honors in 1902. His first book of poems, An Ode to Harvard (later changed to Young Harvard), came out in 1907. In 1911 he was the Harvard Phi Beta Kappa Poet.Bynner was a professor of Oral English for the Students’ Army Training Corps at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1918. When World War I ended, he taught a course in poetry writing. In 1922 he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he and his partner, Robert Hunt, entertained artists and literary figures such as D.H. Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Carl Sandburg at their home.
His papers are in the Houghton Library, Harvard College Library, at Harvard University.

Buried with the ashes of his long time companion Robert Hunt beneath the carved stone weeping dog at the house where he lived on Atalaya Hill in Santa Fe, now used as the president's home for St. John's College.
