Eleanor Ruth Langley was born on May 12, 1905 in Manhattan, New York, the only child of David Emmett Langley (1877-1945) and Eleanor Ruth Hendricks (1884-1966). She married James Henry Van Alen, nicknamed Jimmy, on May 5, 1930 at Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island. They had two children James Langley Van Alen (1931-2008) and David Henry Van Alen (born 1933). Jimmy and Eleanor divorced in 1948, and Eleanor got custody of the two boys and received a 1 million dollar divorce settlement, Eleanor then married Walter D. Fletcher in 1943, After his death in 1972 Eleanor remarried in 1973 for the last time to Ralph "Ray" Pendleton. This marriage lasted until her death. Eleanor Van Alen died on January 18, 1983 at her rented cottage in Newport, Rhode Island at the age of eighty-one. Eleanor was buried in the Langley family plot.
