He was delighted when he was finally assigned to a ship. The USS Mississippi (BB-128), in February of 1940, After having attended Machine Gun School, in Kuaola, F.R. He was now an expert Machine Gunner.
He was transferred to the USS West Virginia (BB-48) and was at port in Pearl Harbor, T.H. on December 7th, 1941. Ben, heard the Fire and Rescue alarm sound, followed by general quarters. All chaos broke loose.
Ben, had used up all his Ammo on Port Bridge. With his Captain, Binnion, laying mortally wounded, He was told to abandion ship but not before he pulled a shipmate from the burning ship.
He then volunteered duty on the USS Mugford (DD-389). He pulled duty on the USS Mississippi (BB-128), USS New Orlkeans (CA-32), and went on to the U.S. Navy Station, at Long Beach, CA.
Ben, was discharged from service on November 26th, 1945. Moved to San Diego, CA. in 1946. Was Married to Edith Prescott, in 1962, and had a family of one boy and two girls and four grandchildren.
He has given many years of faithful service to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, and served as an officer at Carnation Chapter 3, VMMC, at Balboa Park, in San Diego, CA.
Ben, will be sorely missed by family, friends, and his P.H. Survivor buddies. He was loved by all.
His cremains were inurned on May 31st, 2007, at...
