U.S. Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 until his death in office. The son of former US Congressman Walter Jones, Sr., he attended Hargrave Military Academy, where he excelled in basketball. He attained his bachelor's degree from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and served with the National Guard. Following his service, he worked in the wine industry, prior to entering the political arena, when he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives (he was a member of the Democratic Party during this period) in 1982 (1983 to 1992). After an unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 1992, he won his seat in Washington in 1994, and during his tenure he was a significant proponent of the United States' invasion of Iraq in 2003. Jones later regretted his support after meeting with families who lost loved ones in the conflict. On other matters, Jones was Conservative, as he opposed abortion rights. In 2017, he voted against President Trump's tax bill. Jones suffered a broken hip which resulted in declining health.
