Sidney Martin Adkinson, age 92, went home to be with Jesus on January 31, 2019, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his son, Marty Adkinson, of Oklahoma City; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Judy Adkinson, of Oklahoma City; grandsons, Nicholas and wife Julie and Joshua and wife Sarah; granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachel and husband John; and two great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella Poole Adkinson.

Sid was born on December 24, 1926, in Memphis, Tennessee, to parents Jesse Martin and Mertie Ivy Adkinson. He started working for the Illinois Central Railroad as a fireman at the age of 16. Upon turning 18 in December 1944, he joined the Navy and served on the USS Cowpens in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. In December 1954, he accepted a position as an Accountant with Halliburton Services in Duncan, Oklahoma, where he worked for more than 37 years. He retired in December 1991 as Senior Executive Vice President/Administration and Controller.

He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was 12 years old. Sid was very active in the ministry of every church of which he was a member. A man of great humility, he was never “too big” to do anything he was asked to do in that ministry; from mowing the church lawn to cooking biscuits and gravy for the Men’s Bible Study. He reflected God’s love to everyone he met, not in a preachy way but in a genuine, caring way.

Sid was a loving husband and father. He married Marcella Poole in Tulsa on January 15, 1955, and the couple had two sons together. They enjoyed nearly 48 years of marriage until Marcie was called home in December 2003.

A funeral is scheduled for Monday, February 4, at 10:00 a.m. at Village Baptist Church. A graveside service will follow at Duncan Cemetery in Duncan, Oklahoma, at 2:30 p.m., with Dr. Brad Allen officiating. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sid’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Larry and Edwine Adams Assistance Fund in care of the Baptist Village Communities in Oklahoma City.
