Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)

Master-Corporal, a combat photographer and a member of the Army News Team from 3 Area Support Group, based at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, New Brunswick. Age 30. He was serving with NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

MCpl Priede was killed, along with Briton Cpl Mike Gilyeat and the five American crew members, when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed in Kajaki district of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. ISAF officials are investigating the crash and claims by Taliban militants that the helicopter was shot down with a rocket-propelled grenade.

MCpl Priede was originally from Burlington, ON and grew up in Grand Forks, BC area. He joined the military as a gunner in 1996 and later served as a peacekeeper in Bosnia. On his second tour in the Balkans, he applied to become a military photographer and transferred to the Air Force. He also had a photography business in Oromocto, NB and volunteered for the assignment in Afghanistan. He survived by his wife Angela; his parents John and Roxanne Priede; brother David (Alyson Hanna); sister Denise (Steve Erlandsen); grandparents Arnold and Anna Priede, and Lloyd and Charlotte Hibak; and other family members.

"He was a soft-spoken, quiet person and a great listener. He was a very trustworthy, kind and dedicated man who loved his chosen profession of taking pictures both at work and at home," said a statement from the family members.

He is the 56th Canadian soldier to be killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan since 2002.

Funeral services held June 12, 2007 at St. Luke's Chapel, CFB Gagetown, Oromocto NB. Private interment.

In Honour of MCpl Priede, the Canadian Forces has instituted the Master Corporal Darrell J. Priede Top Candidate Award for the seven-week Army News Course which began in the Fall of 2007.
